Jonathan Holby is a Fight Choreographer, Martial Artist and a serving member of the British Army as part of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
He started his training in Shotokan Karate at the age of 7 and after obtaining his 1st dan taught his own class alongside his father. Jonathan has continued to train in numerous martial arts and weapon systems and has gone on to work as a Fight Director/ Co-ordinator for both stage and screen, working in the West End and Internationally. He was introduced to Performance Combat whilst studying as an actor and it is this training that has influenced his approach to choreography, working with the director and actors to create a fight from the characters viewpoint.
Jonathan’s extensive martial arts/unarmed training includes Shotokan Karate (1st Dan), Kick Boxing, Wing Tsun, Krav Maga and MMA. Jonathan is trained in various historical European weapon systems including Rapier and Dagger, 18th Century Small Sword, Hand and a half/Great Sword, Broadsword and Buckler/Shield and Staff (European and Asian). Jonathan also has experience in Katana, Knife and Karambit, Nunchucks and Escrima Sticks.
JH Military has a select team of advisors made up of serving full time and reserve soldiers. We can offer a first hand insight to what soldiering is like for your actors as well as tuition in the correct methods of combat within the British Military. This can range from fire and manoeuvre tactics through to parade drill and skill at arms. As a member of the reserve battalion Jonathan's commitment can be worked around the client whilst still remaining up to date with military changes, ensuring accuracy of performance.
Jonathan has choreographed for leading companies and venues both at home and abroad. His work has ranged from martial arts coordination on film through to international immersive shows in east asia and award winning productions in the west end.
